QUICK LINKS

Artemether is a chemical compound that functions as an antimalarial agent. It acts by inhibiting the growth and reproduction of the malaria parasite within the red blood cells. The mechanism of action involves the disruption of the parasite′s ability to form hemozoin, a toxic byproduct of hemoglobin digestion. This interference ultimately leads to the accumulation of toxic heme molecules, causing damage to the parasite and leading to its death. Artemether′s mode of action at the molecular level involves binding to heme and preventing its detoxification, resulting in oxidative damage and ultimately the destruction of the parasite.
