Anethol exhibits diverse biochemical effects, such as enzyme inhibition related to cancer cell proliferation, anti-inflammatory properties, and reduction of oxidative stress. As a natural compound, anethole demonstrates antimicrobial activity. In vitro studies have revealed its ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes responsible for protein breakdown in the extracellular matrix that can lead to tissue damage. Furthermore, anethole effectively suppresses the activity of MMP-9, an enzyme found in macrophages for the inflammatory response.
