Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal antibiotic that forms channels in fungal membranes inducing non-specific loss of low molecular weight molecules to leak out. The compounds mechanism of action is to bind to sterols and disrupt the osmotic integrity of the fungal membrane. In addition to Amphotericin B′s antifungal activity it has been used against leishmaniasis caused by protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus. Amphotericin B was observed to cause suppression of bone marrow progenitor cells and to induce Actinomycin D (sc-200906) sensitivity in drug resistant HeLa cells in vitro.
