Amitriptyline Hydrochloride is an amphiphilic tricyclic compound. It prevents the re-uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin at nerve terminals, thus potentiating the action of these neurotransmitters. Amitriptyline antagonizes cholinergic and alpha-1 adrenergic responses to bioactive amines. Amitriptyline Hydrochloride exhibits micellization and phase separation behavior in the presence of ionic and nonionic hydrotropes. Amitriptyline Hydrochloride and Hemoglobin interact through a static quenching mechanism. Its binding to Hemoglobin is spontaneous. The process involves hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions and occurs with a single binding site. Amitriptyline Hydrochloride, with a pKa of 9.4, primarily exists in its protonated form. Amitriptyline Hydrochloride has also been found to have antimicrobial activity.
