Amantadine Hydrochloride is a chemical that functions as an antiviral agent by inhibiting the replication of influenza A virus. It achieves this by interfering with the viral M2 ion channel protein, preventing the release of viral nucleic acid into the host cell. This disruption of the viral replication cycle ultimately leads to a reduction in viral load. At the molecular level, Amantadine Hydrochloride blocks the ion channel formed by the M2 protein, preventing the influx of protons necessary for viral uncoating. This inhibition of the M2 protein disrupts the acidification of the endosome, preventing the release of viral RNA into the host cell cytoplasm. As a result, the virus is unable to replicate and spread within the host organism.
