QUICK LINKS

alpha-Lipoic Acid is a metabolic antioxidant that regulates NFkappaB signal transduction and can protect against oxidative injury. The exogenous compound is reduced intracellularly by enzymes. Its reduced form is involved in radical scavenging, recycling of other antioxidants, accelerating GSH synthesis, and regulating transcription factor activity, specifically NFkappaB. It also acts as a conenzyme that is required for the activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase and glycine decarboxylase, among other enzyme complexes. Studies show that it can prevent a decrease in the renal antioxidant defense system and prevent the increase of lipid peroxidation, platinum content and plasma creatinine concentrations. In other studies, lipoic acid decreased the phagocytosis of myelin by macrophages, acting as a non-specific scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

is this product a mix of R-(+) lipoic acid and S-(-) lipoic acid? thanks, Emily

Asked by: EmilyWu
Thank you for your question. DL-Thioctic acid is racemic mixture of R-(+) lipoic acid and S-(-) lipoic acid.

Is this reagent cell culture tested? I am talking about the Alpha Lipoic Acid CAS 1077-28-7.

Asked by: Ffaraz
This is not a cell culture tested compound. It is a research grade compound – not a cell culture certified compound – intended to be used for in vitro or in vivo experiments. It may be used for cell culture. Please note that it is supplied pure, but it has not been sterilized.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MidaouiMidaoui, AE. et al. (PubMed 26413386) investigated the effects of -Lipoic Acid on oxidative stress and kinin receptor expression in obese Zucker diabetic fatty rats. Their evidence suggests that oxidative stress is implicated in the induction of kinin B1 receptor. The ability of -Lipoic Acid to blunt the body weight gain appears to be mediated in part by preventing NADPH oxidase activity rise in adipose tissue and reversing the hepatic upregulation of kinin B1 receptor -SCBT Publication Review
