α,α,2,4-Tetrachlorotoluene also known as DCMDB is a widely used aromatic hydrocarbon in the chemical industry. It is a colorless liquid with a volatile nature and a distinct sweet and pungent odor. This versatile organic compound finds extensive applications as a solvent, dye, stabilizer, and catalyst. Its chemical reactivity enables it to undergo various reactions, with the most common one being the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene using α,α,2,4-Tetrachlorotoluene. Catalyzed by anhydrous aluminum chloride or iron chloride, this reaction produces α,α,2,4-Tetrachlorotoluene. α,α,2,4-Tetrachlorotoluene is also capable of forming cyclic compounds, esters, and ethers through different chemical reactions.
