Adenylosuccinic acid belongs to the class of organic compounds known as purine ribonucleoside monophosphates. These are nucleotides consisting of a purine base linked to a ribose to which one monophosphate group is attached. Adenylosuccinic acid has a protective effect on mdx skeletal muscles, and can increase mitochondrial viability in mdx flexor digitorum brevis fibres. It participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. It is involved in the aspartate metabolism pathway, the mercaptopurine action pathway, the azathioprine action pathway, and the purine metabolism pathway. Adenylosuccinic acid is also known as Aspartyl adenylate, Succinyl AMP, adenylosuccinate, and 2-[9-(3,4-dihydroxy-5-phosphonooxymethyl-tetrahydro-furan-2-yl)-9h-purin-6-ylamino]-succinic acid.
