Acetyl isoniazid is a metabolite of isoniazid. The activation and metabolism of isoniazid illustrate important concepts in metabolism and kinetics. Isoniazid is activated by mycobacterial catalase-peroxidase enzyme (KatG) within Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The activated form of isoniazid then inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acids, essential components of the bacterial cell wall. isoniazid is primarily metabolized through acetylation by N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) to form acetyl isoniazid.
