Acetoguanide is an organic compound. It belongs to the class of sulfonylureas. The mechanism of sulfonylureas, including acetoguanide, involves the inhibition of ATP-sensitive potassium channels on the pancreatic beta-cell membrane. By closing these channels, the cell membrane depolarizes, leading to the opening of voltage-dependent calcium channels. The influx of calcium then triggers the exocytosis of insulin-containing granules, thus increasing insulin secretion. Acetoguanide is also known for its role as a precursor in the synthesis of various sulfonylurea derivatives.
