8-Chlorotheophylline is a xanthine alkaloid derivative. 8-Chlorotheophylline is closely related to theophylline and caffeine in structure. Functioning as an adenosine receptor antagonist, it impedes the effects of adenosine on the central nervous system. Moreover, it acts as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, restraining the activity of the enzyme responsible for cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) degradation.
