(7E,9E)-β-Ionylidene Acetaldehyde, also known as β-ionone, is an organic compound that belongs to the family of terpenoids. It is a yellowish liquid with a characteristic floral aroma and is widely used in the fragrance industry. In agriculture, (7E,9E)-β-Ionylidene Acetaldehyde may act to attract beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, and repel pests, such as mosquitoes and aphids. It is also a useful intermediate for preparing retinoic acid derivatives. In vitro studies have shown that (7E,9E)-β-Ionylidene Acetaldehyde can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, including breast, colon, and prostate cancer cells, by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. (7E,9E)-β-Ionylidene Acetaldehyde has also been shown to reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and COX-2. In addition, it can protect cells from oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Lastly, it possesses antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
