7-Ketocholesterol, also known as 7-oxocholesterol, is a derivative of cholesterol. It is naturally produced in the body through the oxidation of cholesterol by the enzyme cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase. 7-Ketocholesterol can also be formed during the oxidation of cholesterol by reactive oxygen species or by exposure to ultraviolet light. 7-ketocholesterol is often used as a biomarker for oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation.
