The compound 7,8-Dihydro-L-biopterin, also referred to as 7,8-dihydropterin, 7,8-DHP, or DHB, is a cofactor required for the synthesis of key neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Additionally, 7,8-Dihydro-L-biopterin acts as a precursor to tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), which is necessary for the production of nitric oxide and other reactive oxygen species. 7,8-Dihydro-L-biopterin is also involved in the breakdown of serotonin and dopamine by monoamine oxidase (MAO).
