7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene is an extremely potent carcinogen that undergoes activation by microsomal enzymes to form a diol epoxide metabolite. This metabolite has the ability to covalently bind to DNA in mammalian cells, ultimately leading to the development of tumors. 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene is classified as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and is considered a carcinogenic organic pollutant that is generated during the incomplete combustion of gasoline and coal.
