6-Mercaptopurine Monohydrate is an antimetabolite of hypoxanthine and a purine analog, so it has a similar structure to the purine nucleotides found in DNA and RNA. It works by inhibiting the enzyme thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT), which is involved in the metabolism of purine nucleotides. This leads to an inhibition of cell growth and apoptosis. 6-Mercaptopurine Monohydrate may act to inhibit the growth of a variety of cancer cell lines, as well as certain types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It′s particularly noted for its role in the study of nucleic acid biosynthesis, offering insights into the mechanisms of action at the molecular level in various biochemical systems.
