6-Hexadecanoylamino-4-methylumbelliferyl Phosphorylcholine (HUPC) is a synthetic substrate used in biochemical assays to measure the activity of enzymes such as phospholipases and choline kinases. When 6-Hexadecanoylamino-4-methylumbelliferyl Phosphorylcholine is cleaved by an enzyme that hydrolyzes phospholipids or phosphorylcholine-containing compounds, the MU chromophore is released and emits a bright blue fluorescence that can be detected using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. The rate of MU fluorescence increase is proportional to the enzyme activity, and therefore, 6-Hexadecanoylamino-4-methylumbelliferyl Phosphorylcholine can be used to quantify the enzyme activity in biological samples. 6-Hexadecanoylamino-4-methylumbelliferyl Phosphorylcholine is particularly useful in the detection and measurement of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phospholipids to produce arachidonic acid and lysophospholipids.
