5-(N,N-Hexamethylene)amiloride is an inhibitor of Na+/H+ antiport and is used to study the mechanism of action of Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) in various physiological processes. It binds to the NHE and blocks the transport of Na+ and H+ ions across the cell membrane. This inhibits the NHE from functioning properly and leads to a decrease in cell volume, pH homeostasis, and ion transport. 5-(N,N-Hexamethylene)amiloride can also affect the activity of other enzymes and proteins involved in cell signaling pathways, leading to changes in gene expression and cell metabolism. In addition, it may act to modulate the activity of ion channels and receptors, leading to changes in cell excitability and neurotransmitter release.
