5-Fluorouracil-13C,15N2 is an isotopically labeled inhibitor of DNA synthesis. 5-Fluorouracil-13C,15N2 serves as an internal standard for the quantification of 5-fluorouracil using GC- or LC-MS. 5-Fluorouracil, a pyrimidine analog, effectively hinders the activity of thymidylate synthase, an enzyme for thymidine synthesis necessary for DNA replication. The intracellular metabolites of 5-fluorouracil exert their cytotoxic effects through two mechanisms: either by inhibiting thymidylate synthetase or by incorporating themselves into RNA and DNA molecules, consequently initiating the process of programmed cell death, known as apoptosis.
