5-Fluoroorotic Acid, Monohydrate (5-FOA) is a white crystalline powder soluble in water, ethanol, and methanol. It has become useful for research in the field of molecular genetics and has been employed in the selection of resistant strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae that possess a mutant URA3 gene which renders them orotidine-5í-phosphate decarb. It is an analog of uracil, a nucleotide base that is a building block of RNA. 5-Fluoroorotic Acid, Monohydrate is used to study the function of enzymes involved in uracil metabolism and to screen for compounds that affect uracil metabolism.
