5-Dodecanoylaminofluorescein di-b-D-galactopyranoside is a substrate that exhibits fluorescence in the presence of β-galactosidase. When acted upon by β-galactosidase, it undergoes enzymatic cleavage, resulting in the release of fluorescein. The intensity of the fluorescence emitted can be used to measure and quantify β-galactosidase activity. The chemical structure of 5-Dodecanoylaminofluorescein di-b-D-galactopyranoside closely resembles that of natural galactose. Due to its lipophilic properties, the molecule binds to the cell′s plasma membrane and is then transported into the cell via ATP binding cassette transporters located on the cell surface.
