5-Carboxamidotryptamine maleate (5-CT) is a serotonin analog that has been widely used in scientific research to study its effects on the central nervous system. It is a 5-HT1 agonist with high affinity at 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, 5-HT5 and 5-HT7 receptors. Activation of 5-HT1 receptors may act to reduce the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine, while activation of 5-HT2 receptors may act to increase the release of these neurotransmitters. 5-Carboxamidotryptamine maleate has also been shown to modulate calcium levels in cells.
