Foscarnet sodium functions as a potent inhibitor of viral DNA polymerase, effectively binding to its active site and obstructing the enzyme′s capacity to catalyze phosphodiester bond formation between the 3′-OH and 5′-P ends of DNA strands. By doing so, it effectively halts the replication of viral DNA, leading to the inhibition of viral replication.
