4-Pyridinecarbonitrile is a reagent for the synthesis of 1-tolyl-5-benzylthiotetrazole and 2-hexylthio-4-pyridinecarbonitrile, which are antituberculotics. 4-Pyridinecarbonitrile plays a role in the preparation of Pinacidil, an antihypertensive agent, through chemoselective and environmentally friendly oxidative rearrangement reactions. It has also been utilized in the discovery of inhibitors for human L-xylulose reductase (XR), an enzyme involved in glucose metabolism. The compound is a white solid, soluble in water and polar solvents. Upon exposure to hydrochloric acid, 4-Pyridinecarbonitrile undergoes a reaction leading to the formation of picolinic acid. Additionally, x-ray crystallography has been used to determine the crystal structures of 4-Pyridinecarbonitrile and its quinoline derivatives when bound to specific molecules.
