4-Oxo-2-nonenal has been recently identified as a product and marker of lipid peroxidation, derived from oxidized ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. It exhibits a variety of biological activities including but not limited to inhibiting activity, cytotoxicity, chemotactic activity, and growth genotoxicity. It has been shown to actively modify lysine and histidine residues on proteins and is known to cause protein cross-linking. Furthermore, 4-oxo-2-Nonenal is also known to modify 2'-deoxyguanosine, further indicating lipid peroxidation in carcinogenesis and mutagenesis.
