4-Methylumbelliferyl palmitate is a fluorogenic substrate for lipase in human leukocytes. Lysosomal acid lipase can cleave 4-Methylumbelliferyl palmitate to release a fluorescent moiety. 4-Methylumbelliferyl palmitate may also be cleaved by different acid lipases as well. 4-Methylumbelliferyl palmitate can be used to assess lysosomal acid lipase activity in small scale blood samples.
