4-Methylumbelliferone sodium salt is a selective inhibitor of Hyaluronan (HA) synthesis. HA is a major component in the metastasis of malignant tumors. Studies indicate that in the presence of 4-Methylumbelliferone sodium salt cell proliferation, migration, and growth are inhibited, while apoptosis is induced. In addition, the motility and cell growth was inhibited in fibroblast cell line NIH/3T3 (sc-2210). 4-Methylumbelliferone sodium salt is thought to function as an inhibitor via the depletion of UDP-glucuronic acid, the common substrate for HA synthesis. It is also believed that 4-Methylumbelliferone sodium salt can suppress the expression of HA-synthase.
