(4-Methylphenyl)acetaldehyde, also known as 4-MPA, is a volatile organic compound that is widely used in a variety of scientific and industrial applications. It has been used as a model compound to study the metabolism of a variety of compounds, including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, alcohols, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Furthermore, it has been used in studies to investigate the effect of various environmental pollutants. (4-Methylphenyl)acetaldehyde is metabolized by the enzyme cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), as well as aldehyde dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, and xanthine oxidase. (4-Methylphenyl)acetaldehyde has been found to potently inhibit CYP2E1, be a weak carcinogen, cause liver damage, and disrupt the endocrine system.
