4-Hydroxyisoleucine is a compound that functions as a regulator of glucose metabolism. It acts by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and increasing insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. 4-Hydroxyisoleucine also plays a role in the activation of the enzyme glycogen synthase, which promotes the storage of glucose as glycogen in the liver and muscles. 4-Hydroxyisoleucine may inhibit gluconeogenesis, the process by which the liver produces glucose from non-carbohydrate sources.
