4-Hydroxy-2-butanone is a precursor to the substrate employed in a copper(I)-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of β-hydroxylactones. 4-Hydroxy-2-butanone has been used to prepare 4-methyl-5-hydroxymethylthiazole, (±)-lineatin, mevalonic acid lactone, and verrucarin.
