4-Cyanobenzohydrazide (4-CBA) is an important reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of substituted amines and heterocycles. It acts as a nucleophile, attacking the electrophilic carbon atom of an aryl halide. This reaction results in the formation of an intermediate hydrazone, which then undergoes a cyclization reaction to form the final product. 4-Cyanobenzohydrazide is also used as a fluorescent dye in biochemical and physiological studies, as a photolabile protecting group for peptides and proteins, and as a ligand for metal ions, such as copper and zinc, to form coordination complexes.
