4-Aminoimidazole Dihydrochloride (4-AI 2HCl) is used as a building block for the synthesis of vitamin B12-analogs via Eubacterium limosu. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzymes acetylcholinesterase and tyrosine hydroxylase, which are involved in the breakdown of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and dopamine, respectively. It interacts with certain receptors, such as the glutamate receptor. 4-Aminoimidazole Dihydrochloride may act to affect the metabolism of various compounds, such as glucose and fatty acids.
