Gentamicin C2 Pentaacetate Salt (GCPS) is an antibiotic complex which consists of three closely related components, gentamicins C1, C2, C1a, and also Gentamicin A which differs from the other members of the complex but is similar to Kanamycin C. Gentamicin C2 Pentaacetate Salt exerts its antimicrobial activity by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, which inhibits the translation of mRNA into proteins. This inhibition of protein synthesis leads to the death of the bacterial cells. It also binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, which leads to the disruption of the bacterial cell membrane, resulting in cell death. Gentamicin C2 Pentaacetate Salt can inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi and mammalian cells. Moreover, it may act to induce apoptosis in cancer cells and inhibit the expression of certain genes.
