Dimethylglyoxime is a chelating agent which forms complexes with metals such as copper, nickel, and palladium. One use of this organic chemical is to determine the concentration of nickel(II) in solution by forming a planar insoluble dimethylglyoxime-nickel complex which precipitates out of solution. The complexes formed with the metals nickel and copper are soluble in polar solvents, with the copper substance having a greater solubility due to its ability to complex with the solvent molecules. Further studies have shown that dimethylglyoxime is a key component in cobaloximes, ligands useful in cleaving vitamin B12 (sc-296695).
