Oxacillin sodium salt is used to study mechanisms of penicillinase resistance and antimicrobial susceptibility. It has been used to study autolysins. Oxacillin sodium salt works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It does this by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are involved in the synthesis of the cell wall. This binding prevents the cross-linking of the peptidoglycan chains that make up the cell wall, leading to the death of the bacteria.
