Resolvin D1 is from a family of potent lipid mediators derived from both eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA), it is an anti-inflammatory and promotes the resolution of the inflammatory response back to a non-inflamed state. It is part of a larger family of compounds known as specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs). It is produced physiologically from the sequential oxygenation of DHA by 15- and 5-lipoxygenase. This lipid mediator exerts its effects by binding to specific G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) on the surfaces of various cell types involved in the inflammatory response, including leukocytes and endothelial cells.
