It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, as a catalyst in polymerization reactions, and as a solvent for a variety of organic compounds. The mechanism of action of 4-(3-Butyl-1-imidazolio)-1-butanesulfonic acid triflate is not well understood. It is believed to act as a proton donor, donating protons to the reaction mixture and allowing for the formation of new molecules.
