QUICK LINKS

3′-Deoxyinosine is an interesting modified nucleoside. In the normal nucleoside inosine, a purine base known as hypoxanthine is attached to a ribose sugar, but in the case of 3′-deoxyinosine, this ribose lacks a hydroxyl group (-OH) at the 3′ position. This lack is signified by the term ′deoxy′ in the name. Inosine is notable because it can pair with not only the standard bases in DNA (adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine), but it can also pair with uracil, which is typically found in RNA. In the context of 3′-deoxyinosine, the deletion of the 3′-hydroxyl group prevents the formation of a phosphodiester bond necessary for the incorporation of the next nucleotide during DNA or RNA synthesis. In terms of its physical properties, 3′-deoxyinosine is typically a white or off-white crystalline powder. It′s often used as a research tool in molecular biology, particularly in the study of DNA synthesis and repair mechanisms, as well as in the field of genetic engineering. This unusual molecule offers intriguing possibilities for studying the complex world of nucleic acid biochemistry.
