3′-Deoxy-3′-fluorothymidine, also called Alovudine, is an antiviral agent and a synthetic nucleoside analogue of thymidine, a naturally occurring pyrimidine nucleoside. It is a member of the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) family. Alovudine works by inhibiting the activity of HIV-1 and HIV-2 reverse transcriptase, which blocks the conversion of RNA into DNA, thus preventing the virus from replicating. It also inhibits the activity of other enzymes involved in viral replication, such as DNA polymerase, integrase, and the HIV-1 protease.
