Pepstatin A inhibits the aspartic proteases cathepsin D, pepsin, and renin. Additionally, Pepstatin A suppresses p53-dependent apoptosis in lymphoid cells as well as TNFα-induced apoptosis in U937 cells. Pepstatin A also efficiently inhibits HIV-1 protease and Fcgamma receptor induction by IFN-gamma. Pepstatin A is a bacterial-derived chemotactic pentapeptide which is irreversibly inhibits aspartic proteases. Pepstatin A is also used as a research tool in studies of protease mechanisms and biological functions.
