Tacrine Hydrochloride may act to reversibly inhibit acetylcholine esterase (AChE). This compound has been reported to display hepatotoxicity, more specifically causing pericentral necrosis and fat degeneration of hepatocytes. Additionally, tacrine hydrochloride has demonstrated the ability to cause a decrease in liver glycogens and an increase in Heme Oxygenase 1. Other experiments suggest that tacrine hydrochloride causes functional and morphological changes in the endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, and mitochondria of the liver via DNA synthesis impairment. Tacrine hydrochloride is an inhibitor of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE).
