3-Nitropropionic acid is a potent irreversible inhibitor of mitochondrial complex II enzyme, which causes dysfunction and oxidative stress in mitochondria. 3-Nitropropionic acid is an important research compound because it can simulate the effects on cells that result in the formation of Huntington′s disease. The oxidative stress observed in cells is believed to be a result of electron leakage from the mitochondria, which results in cell death. Studies indicate that Galantamine (sc-218556), a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor can attenuate the effects of 3-Nitropropionic acid in rats.
