3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaric Acid is an antilipemic agent which lowers cholesterol, triglycerides, serum beta-lipoproteins and phospholipids. It interferes with the enzymatic steps involved in the conversion of acetate to hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A and inhibits the activity of hydroxymethylglutarryl CoA reductases which is the rate limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. It may act to inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in drug metabolism, inhibit the activity of certain receptors in the central nervous system, and modulate the immune system. It also has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-oxidant activities.
