Potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) trihydrate, also known as Potassium ferrocyanide trihydrate, is a salt of the Fe(CN)64- ferrocyanide ion. Ferrocyanide is a reducing iron species, being oxidized from ferrous Fe(II) to ferric Fe(III). The ferrocyanide species is membrane impermeable and can be used to assess redox activity of membrane-bound structures and mechanisms of electron transport across membranes. This approach was employed to demonstrate that Potassium ferrocyanide performs reducing activation of membrane-bound dopamine beta-monooxygenase from the exterior face of adrenal vesicles, providing elucidation of native reduction-activation mechanisms for dopamine beta-monooxygenase regulation.
