1,2-Dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE) is a phospholipid emulsifier that has been used for improved DNA-liposome complex transport across membranes. Commonly used with the cationic emulsifier DOTAP ( 3-trimethylammonium-propane)(sc-202589), 1,2-Dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine reduces the toxic effects of DOTAP alone and may act to have a high DNA trapping efficiency of 89% at a DOTAP:DOPE ratio of 2:1 in emulsions. The compound is ideal for use in gene transfer studies for both conditions with serum, in vivo, and without.
