Alexidine Dihydrochloride is an antibacterial and antiplaque agent against Streptococcus mutans, Actinomyces viscosus, and Actinomyces naesludii. In addition, Alexidine Dihydrochloride inhibits the activity of GtfB in solution and on the surface of SHA beads. Furthermore, studies involving DNA content analysis and electron microscopy show that Alexidine Dihydrochloride induces apoptosis by causing mitochondrial damage and membrane depolarization which leads to a loss in cell membrane integrity. This compound is a selective inhibitor of PTPMT1 (protein tyrosine phosphatases localized to mitochondrion 1) with an IC50 = 1.08 muM in vitro. Alexidine Dihydrochloride is an inhibitor od PLB.
