3,3′,5′-Triiodo-L-thyronine can be derived from a thyroid hormone and plays a distinctive role in the complex regulatory system of thyroid hormone activity and metabolism. Unlike its counterpart, thyroxine (T4) or triiodothyronine (T3), which are active thyroid hormones involved in regulating metabolism, growth, and development, reverse T3 is considered an inactive form of the hormone. The study of 3,3′,5′-Triiodo-L-thyronine and its role in thyroid hormone metabolism contributes to our understanding of the endocrine regulation of metabolic processes, including energy expenditure, thermoregulation, and the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis.
