Triton X-100 is a non-ionic surfactant that belongs to a group of related compounds known as alkylphenol ethoxylates. It is also an emulsifier, widely used for the solubilization of membranes and recovery of membrane components under mild, non-denaturing conditions. It is used in the enhancement of film porosity in conducting polymers. Composed of a hydrophobic polyoxyethylene group, which allows it to decrease surface tensions, Triton X-100 is used in biochemistry and molecular biology for lysing cells to extract protein and other cellular components. Its chemical structure is characterized by an aromatic ring (phenol) with a polyethylene oxide chain and an isooctyl phenyl group, facilitating its role as a detergent that can solubilize proteins and disrupt lipid-lipid and lipid-protein interactions.
