This compound belongs to the oxazolidinone class which are useful in chiral synthesis. Substituents at the 4 and 5 position of the oxazolidinone direct all aldol reactions to the alpha position of the substrate carbonyl. Oxazolidinones are commonly used as antibiotics, where the first ever used was cycloserine, a second line drug to Tuberculosis.
