2-Mercapto-4-amino-6-hydroxypyrimidine holds significant importance in the field of biochemistry. As a sulfur-containing analogue of uracil, a pyrimidine nucleoside, 2-Mercapto-4-amino-6-hydroxypyrimidine has garnered extensive study due to its selective inhibition of the enzyme thymidylate synthase (TS). The mechanism of action of 2-Mercapto-4-amino-6-hydroxypyrimidine involves its binding to the active site of TS, thereby impeding the enzyme′s functionality. This binding is reversible, and displacement of 2-Mercapto-4-amino-6-hydroxypyrimidine can occur with other molecules like thymidine triphosphate. Inhibition of TS results in diminished production of thymidine triphosphate.
